Petrodollar System, Henry Kissinger, and Saudi Arabia Agreement
Mark Goodwin describes the birth of the petrodollar system following a 1971 handshake deal between Henry Kissinger and Saudi Arabia. Under this arrangement, the U.S. provided military protection to Saudi oil fields in exchange for all global oil sales being denominated in U.S. dollars. This created a "flywheel" of artificial demand for the dollar, allowing the U.S. to maintain economic hegemony despite massive domestic money printing.
