Topic: Shamanism

The host revisits a previous interview with Dr. Zach Bush, focusing on Bush's transformative near-death experience (NDE). He describes Bush as a "wounded healer" and a modern mystic whose traumatic experience allowed him to evolve past ego and stress. The host relates this to his own recent health struggles, noting how such events can shift one's perspective on life and service.

The host defends Gordon White against accusations of cultural appropriation, characterizing him instead as a cultural participator who deeply respected indigenous traditions. Through a story about anthropologists and "giving shoes to barefoot tribes," the discussion highlights White's belief in treating indigenous people as equals rather than fragile subjects. Connections are made to White's time spent with shamans and his rejection of "white savior" complexes.

White references Aleister Crowley's early experiences with the Goetia to illustrate how magical forces can interact with practitioners regardless of formal rules. He cites Terence McKenna's view that the purpose of life is to familiarize oneself with the after-death state. The segment contrasts the "safe" path of guided shamanic Ayahuasca ceremonies with the more chaotic, self-directed path of the modern magician.

The "spirit-led" model of discovery is illustrated through Ayahuasca, where Amazonian shamans claim the plants themselves taught them how to mix specific roots and bark. White argues that this model should be applied to other ancient bodies of knowledge, such as pyramid construction or hunting skills. He critiques the arrogance of modern researchers who dismiss indigenous claims of spirit contact as mere metaphor or confusion with physical aliens.

Psychedelics are characterized as "invincibility in the palm of your hand," serving as potent catalysts for the initiatory experience. Referencing Terence McKenna, the discussion posits that shamanic practice without entheogens is incomplete. Despite legal restrictions, these molecules have been used for 30,000 years to facilitate engagement with the universe and the realization of immortality.

Entheogens like Ayahuasca provide a "hunting advantage" by enabling telepathic awareness of the surrounding environment, including plants, animals, and the night sky. This state allows the practitioner to feel the individual intelligences of the jungle and perceive plant spirits as literal allies. This experience validates the "Starships" hypothesis regarding the role of altered consciousness in human evolution and spirit contact.

Experiencers of UFO and fairy encounters, such as Chris Bledsoe, often return with purported healing or clairvoyant abilities. This is compared to the Yanomami people of the Amazon, where spirits called "Xapiri" select individuals for a lifelong shamanic career focused on restoring "right relation" between humans and the forest. Historical British witch trials are also discussed, noting that many accused "witches" were likely interacting with fairies or familiars rather than the biblical devil.

A month-long ayahuasca dieta in the Amazon jungle resulted in a perceived ability to communicate directly with plants, described as "Dr. Dolittle powers." This experience informed the management of a heritage cider apple orchard in Tasmania, where 70 saplings were successfully kept alive through two summers. The narrative emphasizes that the "living cosmos" experienced in the jungle remains accessible in a domestic farming context, allowing for a deeper relationship with the land and its organisms.

A childhood bout of meningitis resulting in deafness in one ear is reinterpreted through a shamanic lens. While terrain theory suggests it was a "detox situation" potentially linked to vaccines, the shamanic perspective compares the loss to Odin hanging from the world tree to gain wisdom. The "Odin ear" is viewed as a trade-off that allowed for the capacity to "hear the other world," ultimately facilitating the creation and success of The Higherside Chats.

"The Shaman’s Devil" is a six-week intensive course focused on shadow work and the integration of autonomous "soul parts." Rooted in a shamanic worldview, the course treats memories as living spirits within a "haunted house" of the psyche. Referencing Joseph Campbell and Dr. Tom Zinzer, the program aims to help participants confront the "devil" of their own hidden aspects to reclaim lost energy and reboot their health and relationships.

A vision during an ayahuasca ceremony involved revisiting childhood memories not as recollections, but as active visits outside of linear time. This "Proustian" experience highlights the shamanic belief that healing occurs by working outside of time to integrate autonomous soul parts. The discussion transitions to the impact of parenting on the shadow, noting that radical trust and acceptance from a parent can lead to fewer "stuck" shadow parts in a developing child.

The episode concludes with Greg Carlwood's signature sign-off and the show's theme song. The lyrics emphasize the mystery of the world, the limitations of modern medicine compared to shamanic experiences, and the idea that the truth often wears a disguise. The host leaves listeners with a final challenge to the "architects of atheism" and "servants of scientism."

Greg Carlwood addresses a recent Twitter controversy following the death of his friend Gordon White. He expresses frustration with "anonymous Christian" accounts that posted hateful comments about White's lifestyle and occult interests. Carlwood defends White as a "shamanic healer" who built a positive community, contrasting his behavior with the "moral superiority" of his online critics.

Matt Dragonstone introduces the concept of risk management in magical operations, suggesting that "big rewards" like extreme wealth require "big risks." He reflects on Gordon White's death at age 44, attributing it to physical health issues rather than magical blowback, while acknowledging the stress of being an outspoken magician in a materialist society. The segment emphasizes White's heart-centered approach to his work and his rejection of the "one shot at life" worldview.

The host defends the practice of magic against critics, highlighting that both guests use their skills for the service of others through healing and personal insight. He notes that Gordon White's "Rune Soup" community was built on this principle of service. The segment argues that those who see through the "veil" often develop modalities to help people solve real-world problems rather than just satisfying their own egos.

Carlwood expands on Jason Quitt's theory of astral abductions, noting that many people may be unaware they are out of their bodies during high-strangeness events. He cites the case of Elizabeth Krohn, who was struck by lightning and did not realize she was in an out-of-body state until she saw her own lifeless form. Carlwood concludes that alien encounters are likely more closely related to shamanism and the astral plane than to physical extraterrestrials from outer space.
