Hugh Newman | New Discoveries Of Gobekli Tepe, Karahan Tepe, & Other Ancient Sites
The Endangered Village of Sayburç and Zodiacal Symbols
The site of Sayburç, located under a modern village, features a bedrock enclosure with relief carvings of bulls and a man holding a phallus. The name "Sayburç" translates to "counting signs of the zodiac" or "watchtower" in Kurdish, suggesting an ancient astronomical purpose. The village faces potential demolition as the Turkish government and archaeologists move to excavate the site, which Newman believes is as significant as Göbekli Tepe.
