Andrew Gough details the ancient tradition of honeybee veneration, tracing it back over 100 million years. He highlights the bee's significance in Ancient Egypt, where Pharaohs held the title of "Beekeeper" and royal iconography featured bee symbols. The biological phenomenon of parthenogenesis in bees is linked to the "virgin birth" myths of goddesses like Neith, Artemis, and the Virgin Mary.

Widespread pesticide use is linked to sharp declines in monarch butterfly and honeybee populations, threatening global biodiversity and food security. While glyphosate impacts the milkweed habitats essential for monarchs, a class of insecticides known as neonicotinoids is identified as a primary culprit in honeybee colony collapse. The United Nations has warned that the pervasive rise in pesticide application has catastrophic implications for bird populations and human environmental health.
