Project Often is identified as one of the most extreme mind control programs, involving the testing of a potent hallucinogen known as BZ. Unlike standard LSD, BZ could cause intense paranoia and hallucinations lasting for several days, a reality mirrored in the film Jacob's Ladder. While many MKUltra sub-projects were mundane industrial or academic contracts, a significant portion involved top-secret experiments designed to manipulate human consciousness.

Recluse posits that MKUltra was used as a public scapegoat to hide more extreme joint Pentagon-CIA projects like Artichoke and Project Often. He suggests that Sydney Gottlieb, who was Jewish, was intentionally "hung out to dry" by the CIA establishment. This was partly due to legal loopholes in MKUltra's volunteer-based experiments and partly due to the deep-seated anti-Semitism of Office of Security officials like Paul Gaynor.
