Robert Bigelow's tenure at Skinwalker Ranch through the National Institute of Discovery Science (NIDS) involved unconventional research methods, including the use of Ouija boards and occult practices. Colonel John Alexander, known for his work on non-lethal weaponry, was a key figure in these investigations which documented cattle mutilations and other anomalies. Upon selling the ranch, Bigelow withheld all gathered data from the new owner, pivoting his focus to the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies (BICS) to explore life after death.

The National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS) attempted to study the ranch using the scientific method but found the phenomena to be "precognitive" and always steps ahead of the researchers. Burns suggests that the environment responds to the thoughts and fears of the observer, sometimes manifesting "holograms" like flashing police lights based on an individual's internal anxiety.
