Topic: Mosul

The protagonist of The Lovecraft Code, Gregory Angell, is a professor of religion and linguist who witnesses a real-life massacre of 23 Yazidis in Mosul during the Iraq War. This event shatters his faith and leads him into a clandestine world of intelligence agencies investigating a new, blasphemous terror group. The narrative uses these historical dates and places to explore the idea of a threat potentially worse than the Islamic State.

The Yazidi people claim descent from ancient Sumerians and maintain a unique religious system that predates major monotheistic faiths. Mosul and the nearby ruins of Nineveh serve as critical repositories for untranslated cuneiform texts and ancient artifacts that may hold the key to humanity's origins. The ongoing genocide against the Yazidis by the Islamic State threatens to erase these ancient cultural links and the knowledge they possess.
