Medical Disabilities and Infanticide in Changeling Folklore
A significant portion of changeling folklore is attributed to undiagnosed medical conditions such as autism, Down syndrome, and progeria. Historical records from Ireland between 1850 and 1900 show thousands of cases of infanticide where parents may have used fairy lore to justify the killing of disabled children. These supernatural beliefs often served as a social scapegoat for practical crimes or the abandonment of children in resource-starved societies.
