Minnesota Coronary Survey, Suppressed Data, Cholesterol Findings
The Minnesota Coronary Survey, conducted between 1968 and 1973, was a randomized controlled study designed to prove that reducing saturated fat improved health. The results were suppressed for decades because they showed that participants with lower cholesterol actually had worse health outcomes and higher mortality rates. The data remained hidden in a basement until 2016, when researchers admitted they were disappointed that the findings contradicted their hypothesis.
