Following the Salk vaccine's failure, Vice President Richard Nixon oversaw a shift in domestic health strategy toward the Sabin oral vaccine. This version used a "live" attenuated virus delivered via sugar cubes but was still grown on contaminated rhesus monkey kidney cells. Scientists Bernice Eddy and Sarah Stewart warned of a future cancer epidemic resulting from the widespread injection of SV40 into the population.
