Darren Grimes | Empire, The Indian Act of Canada, & The Residential Schools
Darren Grimes, Ojibwe Heritage and Personal Background
Darren Grimes discusses his background as a registered member of the Mishkego-Gaming Band Ojibwe Nation in Ontario. Having grown up off-reserve in a mining town, he describes a period of detachment from his heritage and a struggle with alcoholism in his 20s. His interest in Indigenous rights was eventually rekindled through disputes with conservation officers over hunting and fishing rights, as well as the recent discovery of mass graves at residential schools.
