Marin Sanuto, Venetian Betrayal, and Alexander the Great
The deck's early history involves Marin Sanuto, a Venetian patrician who may have received the deck as a payoff for betraying Venice to the D'Este family. The imagery on the court cards focuses on the conception of Alexander the Great, specifically his mother's intercourse with the deity Baal Hamon. This links the elite lineage to a "demigod" status and the dark tradition of child sacrifice associated with Moloch.
