Lord Darrell Duppa, a high-ranking Freemason, is credited with naming the cities of Phoenix and Tempe in the 1860s. Duppa chose the name Phoenix to signify a new civilization rising from the Hohokam ruins and named Tempe after the Vale of Tempe in Greece due to the area's strategic water resources and geological similarities.
