Topic: Lapis Lazuli

Byzantine Orthodox iconography is described as a physical manifestation of spiritual ascent. Icons are constructed in layers, starting with dark earth tones and building toward refined pigments like malachite and lapis lazuli. This "material pyramid" mirrors alchemical principles where the physical medium itself represents the rising of light out of chaos, a tradition largely preserved through oral instruction in specialized studios.
