Lilith, Lamashtu, and the Origins of Child Abduction Lore
The history of supernatural child abduction is traced back to ancient Sumerian and Judaic traditions, specifically the figures of Lamashtu and Lilith. Lamashtu was a bird-footed deity known for killing children, while Lilith was later characterized in Jewish tradition as Adam's first wife who spawned a progeny of demons. These entities established the Western motif of the "thief in the night" that influenced later fairy and demon folklore.
