Darren Grimes | Empire, The Indian Act of Canada, & The Residential Schools
The Indian Act, Government Transparency and Document Recovery
While researching his book, Darren Grimes discovered that the Canadian government website only hosts versions of the Indian Act dating back to 1985, effectively obscuring the original 1876 document. To recover the historical text, he had to source scanned PDFs from various First Nations websites. He eventually hired a typist in India to convert a barely legible scan of the original act into a searchable, readable digital format.
