Topic: Fairy Doctors

Historical "fairy doctors" and "cunning folk" were specialists who diagnosed conditions like being "elf struck" or suffering from fairy vengeance. An anecdote from Glamorgan, Wales, describes a farmer who offended a fairy court by bulldozing mounds, leading to a curse that manifested generations later. These stories illustrate a lost holistic understanding of the human role within a "more than human" world and the lingering effects of ancestral spiritual conflicts.

Parents used various magical rituals and physical deterrents, such as placing iron in a bed, to protect children or retrieve them from the fairies. Retrieval methods often involved "fairy doctors" who prescribed specific acts like passing a child through standing stones or cooking a black hen. Some darker traditions involved abusing the changeling to force the fairies to return the original human child through a spiritual exchange.
