Napoleon altered French invasion plans for Egypt to include a stop in Malta, replacing the original staging ground of Crete. Bosley argues this was motivated by Napoleon's interest in the Knights of Malta and the island's megalithic mysteries. The French government, specifically the Directory, supported the distant expedition partly to remove the increasingly popular Napoleon from the domestic political scene.
