In May 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald and Judith Vary Baker both began "cover jobs" at the Reily Coffee Company in New Orleans on the same day. Haslam asserts that Oswald was assigned as Baker's bodyguard and handler while she conducted virus research. The two reportedly spent their mornings commuting together on the Magazine Street bus and their afternoons working in clandestine laboratories.
