A doctoral candidate at Tulane University discovered that an extract from cocoa beans is more effective than fluoride at preventing tooth decay. Laboratory tests on human molars showed that cocoa extract resulted in harder enamel and 8% less calcium loss when exposed to acid compared to fluoride treatments.
