Topic: Asceticism

The conversation distinguishes between Gnosticism and Sabbatean Frankism. While both share a belief in a divine spark and a corrupt material world, Carlwood notes that Gnosticism often emphasizes extreme morality and asceticism, such as that practiced by the Cathars. In contrast, Frankism utilizes the same framework to justify the abandonment of morality and the pursuit of worldly power through sin.

The conversation explores the rejection of traditional gender roles within the cults of Cybele and Mithras. Twyman notes that Cybele was often depicted as a hermaphrodite who despised traditional sex roles, while the Mithras cult was an all-male, potentially homosexual or ascetic order. She argues these traditions were less about sexual orientation and more about achieving power through the subversion of natural biological norms.
