THC 29: Paul Serup | The Lincoln Assassination & the Catholic Church
Legal Battles and the Recruitment of Abraham Lincoln
The discussion explores how Bishop Anthony O'Regan used a prominent Catholic named Peter Sink to prosecute Charles Chiniquy in a series of court battles. Abraham Lincoln was hired as Chiniquy's lawyer during these 1856 trials, which centered on property disputes and character defamation. The host and guest discuss the Church's preference for public litigation and false witnesses over direct assassination during this early period of conflict.
