Lake Eutrophication, Madison Wisconsin Water Quality
The lakes surrounding Madison, Wisconsin, suffer from toxic algae blooms caused by nitrogen and phosphorus runoff from urban development and industrial farmland. Historically, these glacial lakes were clear-water systems where sunlight reached the bottom, supporting diverse fish populations and edible plants like wild rice. The current eutrophic state creates "pea soup" conditions that deplete oxygen and produce neurotoxins dangerous to humans and pets.
