European Union Bailout of Cyprus, Bank Run Crisis
The European Union announced a $12 billion bailout for the government of Cyprus, stipulating that 10% of the funds must come from citizens' savings accounts. This announcement triggered a massive bank run as residents attempted to withdraw their funds simultaneously. Banks responded by closing their doors to prevent total collapse, highlighting the inherent risks of fractional reserve banking systems.

00:04 In the 1930s, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt addressed a nation through a series of radio broadcast known as the Fireside Chats. His aim was to reassure the common man that our society would recover from its troubled times. But we're in the middle of 1930 and I deal with a different kind of fire! 01:04 It's glad to be on the show. Of course, man! Well hey you were telling me yesterday about a massive bank run happening in Cyprus and of course that in itself is serious news everyone tries to get their money out at once and the banks don't have the funds because they're lending out money they actually do not have for anyone who doesn't really know what a bank run is so the banks just say fuck this shit they close the doors and you can't get your money out now there saying you might not be able to get it all but What I thought was interesting, because I looked this up. The catalyst for the bank run was that the European Union came out and said that they made a $12 billion deal to bailout the bankrupt government of Cyprus but 10% of the bail-out money had to come from the savings accounts of citizens. What the fuck? You can't just do that!
