Dr. Angela J. Hattery & Dr. Earl Smith | Policing Black Bodies, Prison Inc., & The Poverty Trap
Voter Suppression, Gentrification and Felony Disenfranchisement
The guests examine modern methods of power suppression, including gerrymandering and the gentrification of neighborhoods like Harlem. They specifically focus on felony disenfranchisement, noting its rise in importance following the Voting Rights Act. By "felonizing" low-level drug possession, the system effectively locks large portions of the Black community out of the political process, preventing them from electing local officials like sheriffs or school board chairs.
