Reich authored several major works including The Cancer Biopathy, arguing that certain cancers are driven by the resignation of the human bioenergetic system and chronic shallow breathing. In 1939, he was invited to join the New York School for Social Research and emigrated to Forest Hills, Queens. He established a private practice in the United States focused on dissolving muscular contractions in patients to restore energetic functioning.
