Haitian Voodoo, Spirit Possession and the Loa
During his time in Haiti, Richard Stanley underwent voodoo initiations and observed practitioners being "ridden" by the Loa, or spiritual entities. He describes the process as a form of energy work where power is moved through the chakras to induce a state of possession. Stanley notes that while Western culture demonizes these practices, the practitioners view the experience as a positive, even orgasmic, union with intermediary beings.
