A recent fire in Altadena, California, destroyed approximately 9,000 homes, though Monica Perez's residence was largely spared. Discrepancies in the official reporting suggest the fire may not have been caused by electrical failure, as power was cut hours before the blaze began. There is speculation that the destruction facilitates a transition to "Smart LA 2.0" by clearing out old infrastructure for new, centralized digital systems.

Reports of dry fire hydrants during the Los Angeles fires are compared to similar failures during the Maui disaster. The CEO of the LA Department of Water and Power, Janice Quinones, and Mayor Karen Bass are criticized for their lack of presence and answers during the crisis. Additionally, the environmental impact of burning modern homes—releasing toxins from plastics and electronics—is highlighted as a major health hazard for residents.
