Dr. Angela J. Hattery & Dr. Earl Smith | Policing Black Bodies, Prison Inc., & The Poverty Trap
School-to-Prison Pipeline, Criminalization of Childhood Misbehavior
The discussion explores the "school-to-prison pipeline," where typical childhood misbehavior is treated as a criminal offense. Specific cases are cited, including a child arrested for taking a 65-cent carton of milk and another for sharing chicken nuggets. Dr. Hattery explains that 50% of Black children have contact with the foster care or child protective services system, which often serves as the first point of contact leading toward future incarceration.
