Italian researcher Felice Vinci proposes that Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey actually took place in the Baltic region rather than the Mediterranean. Vinci points out geographical discrepancies in Homer’s descriptions, such as the Peloponnese being described as a flat island. This theory suggests that the Greeks inherited their epic traditions from northern migrants.

Greg Carlwood brings up Homer’s description of the "wine dark sea" in the Iliad and Odyssey as a potential hint of a different past environment. Crow777 discusses the difficulties of translating ancient languages like Sanskrit and Arabic, noting that modern translations often lose the poetic and multi-layered meanings intended by the original authors.
