Arizona Record Rainfall, Desert Foliage and 1954 Christmas Snow
By December 1954, Reich's cloud-busting operations resulted in record-breaking rainfall and a rare snowstorm at the Tucson Airport on Christmas Day. Desert areas saw the spontaneous growth of prairie grass from dormant seeds, and mountain ranges turned green for the first time in modern memory. The intense rain caused massive flooding in perennially dry riverbeds, requiring the evacuation of 2,000 families and breaking every weather record in Arizona history.
