HP Lovecraft, Family Trauma and Atheistic Schizophrenia
HP Lovecraft's personal history, including a father who died of syphilis and a mother who suffered from psychosis, deeply informed his supernatural fiction. Despite being a committed atheist who championed scientific principles, Lovecraft wrote foundational texts for what would become ancient alien theory. This internal conflict created a narrative tension where he dismissed superstition while simultaneously describing alien beings controlling Earth.
