Prison Sentence, Book Burning and the Death of Wilhelm Reich
Reich was sentenced to a year in prison at Lewisburg State Penitentiary, where he died in 1957 just days before his scheduled parole. Following his conviction, the U.S. government burned over eight tons of his scientific literature and books in incinerators, a rare instance of state-sanctioned book burning in America. A final manuscript titled Creation reportedly went missing from his cell and is rumored to be held by the FBI.
