Gary Indiana and the Company Store Wage Slavery Model
The city of Gary, Indiana, is cited as an example of a "magic city" where workers allegedly dug existing old-world masonry out of sand dunes rather than building it. Gibson argues that the robber barons used the "company store" model to create a captive labor force of wage slaves. This system allowed the elite to extract wealth from Appalachia and other industrial regions by controlling all aspects of life.
