Lefty Rosenthal, College Sports Poisoning Incidents
Mob associate Lefty Rosenthal, the inspiration for the film *Casino*, was notorious for fixing college sports in the 1950s. Rosenthal allegedly bribed players to practice missing layups and once poisoned an entire visiting football team at a Chicago restaurant to ensure a win for the underdog, Northwestern. Similar allegations of food poisoning to influence game outcomes surfaced in the NFL during the 1970s involving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Minnesota Vikings.
