Following the success of his book on the Fouke Monster of Arkansas, Blackburn conducted a tour of Southern swamps to investigate regional legends. His research in Bishopville revealed significant inaccuracies in previous accounts and Wikipedia entries, leading him to write a dedicated book on the subject. He compares the allure of these sightings to classic cinema like "Creature from the Black Lagoon."

The 1972 film "The Legend of Boggy Creek" popularized the Fouke Monster, a hairy, aggressive creature reported in southwestern Arkansas. Blackburn explains that the movie was based on real reports from the 1960s and 1970s, though sightings in the region continue into the present day. His research into the case uncovered previously unknown details that contributed to his book's success.
