Dr. Angela J. Hattery & Dr. Earl Smith | Policing Black Bodies, Prison Inc., & The Poverty Trap
US History Education, Balkan Student Exchange Comparison
The guests critique the American education system for stripping "hard truths" from history textbooks. They share an anecdote about teaching a summer course to exchange students from the Balkans who possessed a significantly deeper understanding of United States social history than their American peers. The segment highlights how American students often only learn a "highlight reel" of history from Harriet Tubman to Martin Luther King Jr., missing the systemic context.
