Wilhelm Reich Early Life, Family Tragedy and World War I
Wilhelm Reich was born in 1897 in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and grew up observing nature on a rural estate. His adolescence was marked by a family tragedy involving his mother's suicide and his father's subsequent death from pneumonia. After serving as an artillery officer in World War I, Reich moved to Vienna to attend medical school, where he became interested in the pioneering work of Sigmund Freud.
